Library Policies:

Book check-out limits:

Kindergarten: Students will be phased into the whole library collection. For the first month they will be allowed selections from “on top” of our picture book section. Then just picture books. Then early chapter books. Then all the non-fiction selections.  This helps to not overwhelm our new students with the depth of our collection.  Kindergarteners will be allowed to check out 1 Book each week.

1st grade: 1st graders will begin the year with 1 book a week. In January they will be granted the privilege of 2 books a week.

2nd grade: 2nd graders will be allowed 2 books a week.

3rd grade: 3rd graders will be allowed 3 books a week.

4th grade: 4th graders will be allowed 4 books a week.

5th grade: 5th graders will be allowed 5 books a week.

Book Selection:

Book selection is a special time for our kids. It is one of the times during their school day that they have choice and autonomy over their selections.  While I am ALWAYS happy to make suggestions for the students I want to allow them this freedom.  As a parent I encourage you to look over the books your child selects each week. This is a great time to chat about what they are reading or why they picked a certain book.  If there is ever a book that you don’t want them checking out they may return it to the library before the next library period and get a new selection.

Throughout the year we will talk about our book choices and there will be times that I will encourage exploring different genres or new styles. We will also review choosing “Just right books” and other ways to encourage a breadth of selections.

If there is ever an issue with what your child is selecting on a regular basis please contact me.
